Peggy Berwald is an accomplished nursing executive who is passionate about the difference transformational nurse leaders can make in the lives of their patients and families, staff, healthcare organizations, and communities.
Peggy has 43 years of acute care experience from the bedside to the administration level. Peggy has worked in both academic and community medical centers with her most recent experience at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, a large regional not for profit community medical center in Los Angeles, where she was employed for the past 38 years. Peggy’s experience includes 21 years of adult critical care staff and supervisor roles, 5 years at the nursing director level, 4 years at the Vice President of Nursing level, and 13 years as the Senior Vice President of Patient Services and Chief Nursing Officer. Peggy has also been a guest lecturer at UCLA School of Nursing and Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles.
Peggy’s areas of expertise include the nurse executive’s role in organizational engagement, nursing strategic planning, Magnet® designation and re-designation, interdisciplinary whole shared governance, interdisciplinary model of care, recruitment and retention, expansion of advanced practice nurses across the organization, nursing research and nursing fellowship program, researched nurse residency program, professional development programs/clinical ladders, nursing peer review at all levels, mentoring of aspiring leaders within and outside nursing, succession planning, staff engagement, patient/family experience, quality patient outcomes, nursing’s role in information technology, evidenced based hospital design and regulatory compliance, and board participation.
The Magnet Journey® became Peggy’s Nursing strategic plan when she became the CNO in 2003 and she was able to successfully lead her organization to become Magnet certified in 2011 and re-certified in 2016, the first such medical center in the Southern LA Region. In addition, significant accomplishments include Exemplars from the American Nurse Credentialing Center on initial Magnet designation for the implementation of an organization-wide interdisciplinary shared governance structure and interdisciplinary caring model of care. Peggy was the executive leader for the strategic planning, operations, licensing, and opening of a new 7 story patient tower in Nov 2014 for adult acute-care services (256 private rooms, 12 state of the art OR’s, 4 Cath Labs, and 2 IR Rooms).
Peggy holds a MSN (University of California, Los Angeles), BSN (California State University, Los Angeles - Magna Cum Laude), and Diploma in Nursing (St. Alexis School of Nursing, Cleveland, Ohio).
Peggy is a member of the American Nurses Association/California (ANA/C), Association of California Nurse Leaders (ACNL), American Association of Nurse Executives (AONE), and Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) Honor Society of Nursing. She is also a former Voluntary Hospitals of America West Coast (VHA WC) CNO Steering Committee Member.
Peggy is board certified as an Advanced Nurse Executive by the American Nurse Credential Center (ANCC). Peggy was also awarded UCLA’s School of Nursing Distinguished Alumni in October, 2010, and the DAISY Nurse Leader Award in December 2016 as the first recipient at Torrance Memorial Medical Center.
